Despite these cyclones taking a similar track over Vanuatu, Judy originated over Wallis and Futuna, situated to the north-east, while Kevin originated off the coast of Australia to the north-west. According to classical ideas, cold fronts typically are divided into two main. Cold Fronts If a cold air mass spills onto and overtakes a neighboring warm air mass, the leading edge of this cold air will be a cold front. Not only did Cyclone Kevin cause greater damage due to pre-weakened infrastructure, it also achieved a maximum wind speed of 162mph (260km/h). Vanuatu was then subjected to a second category 4 cyclone only days later on 3 March. Satellite image showing the front with Arctic air behind it moving through Texas Dec. This category 4 cyclone reached a maximum wind speed of 121mph (195km/h) and caused major damage to infrastructure, crops, and led to severe power outages affecting more than 160,000 people. Roads were closed across Colorado on Wednesday night, from the town of Ault to the border with Wyoming, as Buckley Air Force Base, some 20 miles east of Denver, reported temperatures plummeting 46F to 7F in an hour. Cyclone Judy was the first to make landfall on Wednesday 1 March. Over the past week, the Pacific nation of Vanuatu has been hit by two cyclones and two earthquakes. The severe weather progressed north-eastwards to bring similar conditions to parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio on 27 February. Friction slows the advancing cold air causing a steep. Peak winds of 130-135mph ( 209-217km/h) caused power cuts, gas leaks and significant damage to buildings. Weather along an advancing cold front is much different than that along a warm front (Figure 8.19). ![]() Later that day, a significant tornado hit the city of Norman, Oklahoma, tracking perilously close to government buildings, including the National Weather Centre. These storms brought torrential rain, large hail, wind gusts above 70mph, alongside 17 tornadoes, leading to one death and dozens of injuries. In a warm front, warm air still rises up, but gradually squeezes out the cold. A band of severe thunderstorms swept north-eastwards across parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas on 26 February. In the case of a cold front, cold air jumps under warm air, forcing it to rise up. Other parts of the world were not so fortunate last month, as February ended on a very turbulent note for parts of the US. However, this cold snap should be quite brief, with a return to spring-like temperatures forecast by early next week. These show where the warm air masses are moving up over the cold air masses. These wintry conditions will feel extra harsh in contrast to the mild temperatures of recent weeks. Warm fronts are shown on weather maps as lines with circular teeth. Parts of Scandinavia will also get some snowfall under these conditions. ![]()
